It might be wise to check for a head gasket leak, That's how they exhibit
early signs of failure.

I've been that route. I even extended a leaky headgasket for a few months by
creating a "burp" system to release the gasses ( this is beginning to sound
gross) while retaining the coolant. Got me through to spring so I didn't
have to do the gasket in the cold.
