[Vwdiesel] R & R dash

The dash (padding) assembly in my '81 Rabbit Truck has gotten to the 
point where I need to replace it.  Before I head off to the local "self 
service" junk yards I'd like to know the most efficient tricks and tools 
for removing the dash assembly without destroying it.  I have tried to 
remove mine before and couldn't get it released.  I followed the 
instructions in the Bentley book but no luck.  My truck has AC if that 
makes much difference.  I need some guidance on this.

Also any suggestions as to what other VW models/years have dash 
assemblies that are a direct fit?
