I finally found the paper telling which bearing gets 
the full oil groove!  Here's the text in full...

  Attention
Change in main bearing sets for the 
water-cooled gasoline, alcohol and diesel
1500cc, 1600cc and 1800cc VW engines.

  In accordance with a change introduced by Volkswagen,
Metal leves S.A. has altered the composition of the main bearing
sets bc-290-j and bc-326-j.
  The change made in these sets aims at improving oil flow to the 
connecting rod bearing.
  (Omitted little chart of numbers, before and after parts, etc)

On the back is a couple pictures showing the old set (one shell 
with a groove) ant the new set (both shells with a groove).
Below those is a picture of a crank with the main bearings 
indicated by numbers.
  The full groove set goes on main bearing #4.
Burn that into your skulls!  ;-)
