I have seen them use salt where I live here in Colorado, they also use MgCl2
( Magnesium chloride)
as shown by the special settings on the car wash selector switches> I see
more old VW's here but I was dismayed to see the use of salt this season.
They sure don't know how to clear the snow here very well here and the
excuse has always been " We usually get snow and it melts in 2 or 3 days " -
that's well and good but no excuse for not being prepared to be able to
clean it up. With the speed limit 75 on I-25 here so many idiots flip suv's
and have accidents when it's dry even worse when it's wet.... Makes me miss
Chicago...

Myself, I would rather they didn't use salt or deicer here in NY. The
traffic seems to slow down considerably when the white stuff covers the
road, I've actually observed fewer condition related accidents when
they don't use the stuff, but after they salt the road and drivers can
see even a little spot of pavement, they seem to think just because the
roads salted, they can zip along much fast, when in fact the deicer
makes driving more dangerous. The slush will pull you off the road
faster than the hard packed snow will every time. Of course this is
just my observation as a fireman that has 12 miles of interstate
highway to cover, but the statistic seems to hold true, at least here.

The fact that salt eats out car bodies and pollutes ground water is
reason not to use it right there. In Colorado (definitely snow
country) they use sand.

Thank you , Roger Brown, for amplifying on the Caltrans chain requirement. I
agreed on everything you said except one point, Caltrans DOES use salt, at
least according to some local newspaper articles & TV news reports I have
seen. I am very sensitive to the use of salt for road deicing. This is one
of the main reasons I left Minn. Back in the 1960s, most cars would start
rusting out in 3 years. 1957 & 1958 Plymouths & Dodges would start rusting
out in less than one year. Here in Calif. you can still find rust free old
cars including the afore mentioned Dodges & Plymouths. I have collected old
cars over the years. I have 2 Hudsons, 2 Packards, a 1941 Ford & other old
cars that are rust free.

I did say I wouldn't buy a 'transverse' didn't I?
I've actually bought it to replace my mother-in-law's Polo (a kind of Audi
50).
She was looking for power steering as she was 82 in August and her wrists
are weakening and her night vision is reducing (better lights in one of
these!)
