I much prefer soldered ends.

They are similar to the compression ones you are familiar with, without 
the compression part- it's just a straight copper sleeve.  I've made 
ends out of copper pipe before too, just flatten it and install, drill 
the end out later for a bolt..
You partially crimp the copper end onto the wire, just so it stays put. 
  Of course, you have already saturated the wire with solder paste at 
this point...  then heat the copper end with a propane torch, and feed 
solid core solder to the inside of the connector until it's full. let 
cool without moving it.
