However I was given the following info but can't guarantee how accurate it is. 1)Volvo, during the early '80s when they imported diesels to the USA, used VW 6 cylinder truck diesel engines. 2) I heard, but don't know how true this was, that these VW truck diesels needed an overhaul about every 130,000 miles or 200,000 kilometers. For my own knowledge, I would like to know how true my info is as to the longevity of these engines.

They were used in trucks in Europe to the best of my knowledge.

The four engines that we had dealings with in station wagons all died
about 150,000 miles. Three lost compression (one was from a bad
rebuild). The fourth died from eating a timing belt. Something about
cylindernumber one not getting even cooling or something. I stayed out
of that whole thing as much as possible. Dad's five speed wagon,
though, when running, was a fabulous car. It was the one with a bad
rebuild--not all shops who say they can really can after all--and Dad
finally gave up and stuffed in a gas engine. Hated to do it, but he
needed the car and it was easier than rebuilding it. Again.
