He was also driving much more softly than most of us

said disconnecting the boost enrichment left him with
plenty of power. I tried it one day and soon reconnected
it for SAFETY! The pickup was slower than my NA Rabbit.
Dad's MB manual (220D) says something like 45mpg @ 40mph.
That drops to lower 30s or less at 60mph. Drive a Rabbit at
40 to 45mph and I bet most any of us could pick up 10 to 15mpg.
He DID admit to exaggeration or at the least, taking advantage
of the fringes of the truth. If he made 70mpg @30mph, he's
not going to tell us it was at 30mph! ;-D
Nate (anybody heard from him in the last couple years?) made
about 55mpg at regular commuting highway speeds. He did admit
that his driving style would probbaly annoy most with REALLY
slow acceleration and drawn out stopping with little use of the
brakes.
