Loren,
An impact gun to remove and install components in an aluminum head? Boy
that makes the A&P in me cringe. Going out would be ok, but not a final
torque going in. What the gun is set to is not the torque you are
applying. The toques rises above the set value, the clutch releases and
the torque drops, clutch engages and torques rises and the process
starts all over again. Every graft I have seen of the torque applied by
an impact wrench has this saw look to it when the clutch releases. When
torquing sharp jabs are bad, especially in Al. Have known mechs that
have been fired for installing spark plugs in an engine with an impact
gun. I don't even allow my tire guy to install wheels with an impact
gun. I would suggest that part of the problem with cracking the head
doing injectors is from using the wrong socket. Use a good quality 6
point socket that is broached just far enough to have full engagement of
the wrenching flats. Ideally a socket for this application will have a
brass sleeve in the area where the b nut threads are that is very close
fitting, this is to protect the threads on the end of the injector and
to keep the socket from tipping on the injector. Anyways if it works
great. Just be aware that you are trading one problem of cracking the
head for pulling the threads from to high of torque.
Justin
