  I was assuming when you wired a switch into the relay 
ground you ran it to ground somewhere rather than cutting 
the wire and splicing the switch into that?  If you did do it 
by splicing in then maybe you're getting a better connection 
to the relay and that changed some of the flickering?  Maybe 
I misread most of what you wrote?  ;-D
