[Vwdiesel] Thermostat temps

Actually, yes. The 92C is preferred. Better heat output in cold WX,
with less temp dips. Keeps the engine cleaner as well. I've never had
problems with overheating with a healthy cooling system, even in the heat
of summer.

I should caution you that I've had some difficulty getting OEM quality
thermostats at 92C, and they tend to be commonly available in lower temps.

Several years ago, in 2000, I put a Standt 92 thermostat into my 91 A2.
The thermostat wore out, and disintegrated, leaving the "valve" plate
in the impeller inlet for the waterpump. This caused a cyl head gasket
failure at the front of the engine, behind the plate for the timing belt.

Don't cheap out on the thermostat. Mine was "name brand". I remember
even asking the good parts people for something heavier looking, with
better rivets. They looked real funny back, and said "Standt is a
great thermostat."

The higher temp will help keep the engine interior dryer year round,
as well.

I'm curious, how do you have a 1.9 in an A1? As I recall they were 1.5s.
