[Vwdiesel] Burning Crankcase Oil (Val Christian)

	Back in the early 70's The local 4 wheel drive guru in the Green
district of Roseburg Oregon had a home-made waste oil heater in his shop. It
was a conventional wood stove that had a cast iron ladle like you melt lead
in welded inside so the cup was about in the middle of the fire box about
two thirds of the way towards the top. It had a pipe coming in from the side
as I remember that he had installed outside the heater a simple petcock
valve on the feed line from a quarter barrel that was mounted to gravity
feed. The outlet pipe inside the firebox was right above the bowl of the
ladle. He would start a wood fire and when the laded was good and hot he
would start the oil drip. The oil would burn as soon as it hit the ladle and
by controlling the amount of oil with the valve he could make more or less
fire in the heater. Since he was a good welder and mechanic and probably
built it with used materials the heater cost him almost nothing and the oil
of course was free. The small amount of wood needed to start the process
wasn't much. I suspect he heated a 40 by 40 sheet metal building on less
than a cord of wood a winter.

  A simple test I tried worked pretty well.  It involved an old oil 
furnace burner and the barrel wood stove in the shop.  Simply 
get a fire going then I put the burner to the draft hole in the 
door and fired it up.  The oil had to be up to "room temp" first 
but it worked well enough that if it were a regular use shop I'd 
seriously consider mounting a burner to the side or something 
on a permanent basis.  :-)
