Rudy,

My '81 Rabbit Truck has been "suffering" with something similar to what
you describe ever since I had the inj pump overhauled a number of years
ago. I would describe what mine does as "hunting" for a stable idle
speed. When the pump came back from the overhaul the idle was set very
high. I had to back the idle screw out almost all the way to get a
reasonable speed. I finally set the idle a little fast so the truck
doesn't vibrate so bad with the AC running. The idle still hunts with
no load, keeping the headlights on loads enough to calm it down.
If/when you figure out what is causing your problem, please let me know.

I just changed Head Gasket, Timing Belt ect. on an 81 Rabbit, new seals on
Cold Start and Input Shaft. Timed it around .98mm. It idles fine and
smooth, when I start out and first step on the trottle it wants to rev
higher and back down and doesn't stay stable. No other way to describe it.

It acts kind of like a gas car that is timed to far advanced. It revs a
little ahead of the trottle if that makes any sense. Once I get going at
speed or a little higher trottle position it seems to smooth out and goes
down the road fine. Almost seems to me like the advance in the pump is
coming in to early or at least feels like it anyway. I hope this makes
sense to someone. Wondering if initial advance is set to high for this
pump. ??
