AFAIK the voltage stabilizer is to maintain a voltage of say 10 volts across 
the instruments irrespective of whether you like to run your alternator at 
12.5 v or 15v... I guess you don't want the gauges going up and down 
proportional to the rpm of the car. Circuitry for the Dasher Quantum Rabbit 
Jetta series up to about mid '88  +GTD /cabriolet t o '92.... are 
essentially the same. That said there are between 5 and 10 variations due to 
'progress' luxury options etc over the period.
There is some 'computerisation' somewhere as the car goes through a series 
of checks/flashing lights when first started. Just a novelty I believe  but 
I've not looked into ripping it out and doing direct links to sender from 
indicator.
