[Vwdiesel] More Dasher?

In trying to get my '81 Dasher diesel running again I found it leaking coolant. I traced the leak to a hose in the back of the engine that looks like it should be replaced. It appears to be a heater hose but appears larger than an ordinary heater hose.The problem in it goes under the battery to a seemingly in accessible area. How do I get at it? Do I remove the battery & tray or box? The last time I looked at it, it seemed to be welded to the firewall. Looking thru the Bentley manual didn't provide an answer but maybe I didn't look hard enough.
