Which is why i remove the batery box and put the battery under the back seat 
of my 4000 Quattro's

It does not unbolt, btw, but is welded in place. Removing the battery will 
help, but it really only gives you a hole to look through. I think in the 
past I've gotten them out sometimes by reaching through the pasenger side 
strut hole where the tie rod goes through.

anyhow, you remove the hose clamp from the heater core inside the car, and 
pull the hose out through the firewall, once you have got it loose from the 
heater core that is. Don't just yank on it, you will break the heater core. 
Getting the new one in is even more fun, but it can be done.
