Pardon the typos, I'm not going to go back and fix them, left over from my
stroke.

Goldie, my 87 td has an 82 1.6TD engine in it, and for that, I had to saw
the front (pulley end) engine mount off it., not rocket science. Otherwise
it fit just fine, including the tranny.

Save the engine mounts from the gas engine (brackets, etc, and maybe the
shifter links)
In a word, don't trow away ANY of the gasser parts umtill the job is complete.
That was a diesel to diesel exchange in goldie.

Now, the rest of rhe story.

diesel related items >like glow plug relay, vacuum pump to the brakes, wire
to the injection pump, gauges,

Goldie's replacement, (probably sooner than later, Flintstone floors, etc.)
a clean, low mileage 87 Jetta carat (gasser) , Has already been fitted with
an 86 1.6NA for "development" purposes (it will get the 82TD when goldie
goes to her final rusting place). I think I used the gas engine mounts (not
sure now). I had no trouble changing it to diesel power, And although it
still has the gas tank in it, I may change it out for a diesel one just
because I have it, and to get rid of the annoying fume flap in the filler neck.

The gasser transmissin may have shorter legs than your diesel one. Chek one
of the several tranny lists on the net and compare the numbers.

You will toss the fuel pump assembly undre the car near the right rear
wheel, andconnect the supply line directly to the tank. You may want to
change out the gauge sender / fuel pick-up assembly in the fuel tank for a
diesel one, but I think you can suck fuel through the integral lift pump
without powering it.On the other hand , if you do power it, you will never
vave to worry about suckin air or priming the fuel system.

The gauge sender is the same in All A2's, gas or diesel.

The supply wire that went to the coil , now goes to the pump soenoid
Most of the wiring associated with the gas engine can be removed withou
disturbin what you will need to hook up the diesel.

Gauges, alternator, etc seem to be in separate looms from the ignition and
gas fuel control sysems. Check twice before cuttin, to avoid splicing.

I' not going to bother to install a water separator, The A3's don't have
one, and use the same filter as the A2's all of which have a water drain on
the bottom.

All the rest is common sense.

It was with some trepidation I went to the registry office to have the fuel
type changed on the card..I had checked the reguklations on the internet
before hand and discovered, in Ontario, where the rule makers are somewhat
anal, like Kalifornia, there were several "out's" available for engine
changes, and sure enough, the girls in the office choked up when I asked.

I showed them copies of the law, but they know nothing about that, so they
phoned head office in Toronto and asked. The person at the other end said go
ahead, issue a new card wity a "D" where the "G" had been, and there was no
charge.

I now own a really rare Carat diesel.

In short, a diesel swap to a gas car is straightforward, and if you have the
donor sitting next to the recipient, you have everything you need to do the job.
