Sorry to hear about your health problems. As for the glow plugs, here's what 
my car has:

I have a toggle switch running the ford starter relay for my glow plugs. It 
works great, as long as it's not left on ;-) I usually cycle them, then turn 
them off before starting the car. That way, it's not forgotten.
