[Vwdiesel] More Dasher?

I would give you a 1 % chance or less that you can make a runner out
of that engine. If it were me I would take one of the other cars that you
have and get the engine running. If you don't have too much smoke I would
then do a compression check and if you don't find them pretty even and over
400 I would think that you should think about rebuilding it or try another
engine on the run then compression test. I have found that 1.5 or 1.6
engines in a rig that isn't running and I don't know the history for sure
are usually dead or dying.
I recently acquired two Dashers. The one had 230 thousand on the
odometer and supposedly ran when parked because of a slipping clutch. The
other said 90 thousand on the odometer and he had been planning on putting
that low mileage engine in the higher mileage Dasher. I trailered ham both
home since the better bodied one with the higher mileage engine was frozen.
I had a 1.6 N/A that I had built a couple of years ago and it was tied to a
Quantum diesel 9Q tranny. When I pulled the engine from the Dasher and
finally got the pistons out by dismantling the engine and pounding out the
pistons the block was so pitted in one cylinder I don't think it could clean
up with 1mm over pistons. It's a fine car now with my engine and tranny. The
second Dasher Station wagon with the supposed 90 thousand mile engine was in
reality a worn out engine with 300 plus compression, lots of crankcase
pressure, smokes like the devil. The head was obviously newer and I assume
some make believe mechanic did a valve job on it since all the valves were
very tight. A couple of intakes wouldn't even let a 4 thousands feeler gauge
slip in. I'm not complaining since the price was right but the story that
goes with the diesel engine that isn't running is many times totally
different than the condition of the engine.

I have one '81 Rabbit & one '80 Dasher, both diesels, with supposedly good
engines & the block may be good on the other '81 diesel Rabbit. So I will
pull the head & try tapping the head for the 1/2" grade 8 bolts I have,
unless I can find where the block is cracked. Where should I look? Don't
think I would loose anything other than a head gasket & time. The head is
still on. Should I torque up the other bolts to specs & run a pressure test
or could the block be cracked where the water doesn't leak?
Loren, thanks very much for your comments.
