[Vwdiesel] 81 Head Bolts

Hi Rudy;
	I have quite a few times used the 11mm early 1.6 heads on a 12mm 1.6
block. All I have had to do is clearance the holes for the 12mm bolts. There
are two or three holes that you must put the washer in the hole before the
bolt since the cam support castings are too close to insert the 12mm bolt
with the washer on. Perhaps someone didn't figure that out and milled out
the washer holes and went too deep. You can't of course use the 1.5 head
with the small oil return hole on the 1.6 blocks but I have never had to do
anything other than clearanceing the holes when using the 1.6 11mm bolt head
on a 12mm 1.6 block.

I found another Head in my shop yesterday with the same deep recessed Head
Bolt lands and the same length from the Head surface to the Washer Land and
is off a known 11mm Head Bolt block.

I've opened up the Bolt holes and widened the Washer Lands on some 11mm
Heads to use on 12mm Engines which worked fine.

My conclusion is that someone bored out the Bolt Holes and used an 11mm Head
on a 12mm Block and found a different Bolt and Washer configuration to fit
the shorter distance from the Head surface to the Washer Land. Confusing to
say the least. Not all 11mm Heads can be used on a 12mm Block. By the way,
these weird Bolts have 10.9 and Germany stamped on the head of the
Bolt.........Rudy

Sounds like something that "fits" has been used, maybe by someone that
didn't like stretch bolts. I believe stretch bolt are all full-thread so
that would make then non stretch. Maybe they're stock bolts from a fastener
supplier, maybe they're from another engine. They were too long so spacers
were used to keep them from bottoming out. Someone went to a bit of trouble
measuring and figuring to use a substitute bolt.
