A local guy did a 4 cyl mod 123 benz to a rover, almost finished it
before succumbing to cancer, then I lost track of it.
you can build an adapter to put any engine to any transmission, just
time and some skull sweat.
Personally, I would choose an Isuzu 6 cylinder.
they were used on a 36 foot CCIL swather, around 1990 to 1994. A little
over a hundred non-turbo horses. They ran on the smell of an oily rag,
and were very conservatively rated.
The 4 cylinder was more common, made 80hp. I have one in a 1996
swather. It's great, all cast iron, VERY robust compared to a VW.
