  The dropping out sounds like brushes but the dimmer than 
normal sounds more like a bad connection on the large, red 
wire to it.  Check where it connects at the battery.  The ones 
that use a ring connector at the terminal rather than plugging 
into a special connector on the cable, can corrode and make a 
poor connection resulting in the problems you're having.
