Hi Tony;
I already have the stock Dasher full pan under the engine and the
full pan under the tranny and drive train so there is a full under pan. I
have the stock "cardboard" that guides the air from the drivers side of the
grill to the side mounted radiator. I have the rest of the grill blocked
off. On my trip to Canada Saturday I intend to run about 45 lbs in my
185-65-14 tires. Narrower would be nice but to get the same gear ratio I
would need to run 165-80-13 and I don't think that would give me much
advantage at 45 lbs of pressure and I would have to buy a new set of tires
and it would take me a long time to get my money back at the slight increase
in mileage. As for the weight of the 16 V wheels the effect on mileage I
believe will be negligible. The weight will somewhat affect handling and
acceleration but should not be very much a problem in rolling resistance.
Check out the disk wheels that the bicycle racers time trial with. They
weigh twice as much or more than a spoked wheel and light aluminum rim but
they improve time trial times appreciably. I will be putting 10.1 inch
brakes on the front this week. Good brakes are nice but the 10.1's need at
least 14" rims and that is another reason I will stay with the 14's. I have
Corrodo 11 inch brakes on my 81 Rabbit pickup and they really stop.

Along the tire lines, 13's are even better. I've had to consider this for my
brake upgrade. And, yes, run the tires at max pressure. That is actually
something better about the lower profiles, is usually they have a higher
max. I'm curious what the diffference is between the rolling resistance of a
155 13" at 35psi, and a 185 14" at 44psi. These are the maxes on my current
tires, just for example.
As for the rest, a full under car plate/pan would help. Also, I'd try
blocking off the grille for aerodynamics reasons. Keep a close eye on the
temp gauge, though. On my 4000 (side mount radiator) it made no temp
difference.
One other thing, William, those 16V wheels look good, but they are very
heavy complared to other 14" wheels. Stock GTI wheels are about the lightest
factory 14's VW offered.
