Be care when reinstalling the couple of oil pan bolts that are tucked in by the transmission bell housing. I've heard they like to cross thread due to the angle you need you get the tools into. I have a swivel adapter for my 1/4' socket that worked wonders.
Also a friend told me to locate the rubber type pan gasket from a later model. only a few dollars more but he said less likely to leak if slightly over torqued.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] Oil pump replacement
Hi all, this weekend I will be replacing my oil pump. Any pitfalls, words of caution or the like? This is in my 85 Jetta N/A Diesel.
