I almost broke down and bought a brake bleeder once, but, being close to broke and in immediate need of bleeding, decided to try using a big syringe (farm supply store for the 60 cc syringe) and some clear plastic tubing (already had a few sizes of tubing) - no pumping needed, seems to have done a fair job.  Don't know if it would work on an ABS system, though.
