Roger brown has a very nice setup.
He uses an optical sensor to pickup off the injection pump sprocket, an 
amp to generate a pulsed signal to simulate the ignition of a gas job, 
and a conventional tachometer from a gasser.

Say, there's an idea- mount a giant tach with a shift light on the dash.

this one uses an inductive probe that straps to the alternator.
Roger's deal is more accurate.
Dunno about price and such, you'd have to look at his web page.
