Okay, I put some of that silicone grease in some diesel the other day and it's 
still there  ;)

Seriously though, I did end up inspecting the o-ring, and since it seems to
be intact I worked on limbering it up some (it was initially quite stiff and 
stuck in it's groove) and working some of this stuff called Sil-Glyde into the
ring and the groove.  After a bit of gentle prodding and poking, the o-ring was 
finally sitting free to turn in the groove once more.  I didn't take it out of 
the groove as I was afraid that would stretch it more than it could rebound,
old as it is.

I know, this must sound like desperate measures, but I couldn't find a viton
o-ring locally, and I was just curious as to whether it would stop the leaking 
for any amount of time - so far, no leaks, one day and counting.
