The bearing on the on mainshaft gave out, causing the seal on the
clutch side to leak.  You can see the scoring on the original
mainshaft in the picture linked below.  I ended up swapping the
mainshaft with one from a transmission donated by a family friend.  I
basically spent my whole spring break that year doing the swap.  The
gears are heat-shrunk on.  Swapping them was a real PITA.    I only
recommend doing this if you have lots of free time and access to
plenty of tools.  But, the experience was definitely worth it.  I
would do it again in a heartbeat.
