  Not sure that applies to diesel though.  There was one station 
in Portland that had good pricing so I used it when I was there 
even though it was in the middle of things instead of right off 
the highway.  Nearly every time I filled up myself and with little 
objection other than "you have the wrong pump!  That's diesel!"
I was driving the Dasher wagon.  I'd point out it WAS the right 
pump because it WAS a diesel!  The attendant would usually go 
help someone else.
