[Vwdiesel] Drone/boom in the back

Getting a booming noise in the back. Thought it was a hole in the exhaust
(There was!) but the boom continues.... Changed tyres. Can't be sure which
side its coming from. No other driver in my immediate family (I guess
grannny could get out of her GTD and drive me whilst I crawl around in the
back.)
One rear wheel has a little play in it even when tightened w/o backing the
nut off slightly. Could it be an inner bearing loose on the stub axle? Seem
to remember someone peening stub with a punch. No apparent binding.
On a slightly different issue, the rear brake regulator big spring seems a
little loose. With wheel raised I tried moving the lever by hand to see if
it seems to alter brake lock (grappling with rear wheel and trying to turn
it whilst the missus puts her foot on the pedal.
She says pushing regulator with my finger actually lifts her foot slightly,
but I couldn't detect any noticeable release at the wheel end. Both slave
cylinders are leaking slightly including a new one. Pads are about half
thickness. Not checked drum wear. Maybe slave is operating outside its
range. Maybe welding some flesh onto the pad tips that push against the
pistons would improve operating region of pistons.
Thanks,
Mark
