  The difference is easily noticeable.  Especially when putting a 
1.5 head on a 1.6 block.  You see the exposed hole, unless you 
put the gasket on before trial fitting, even then...
  As I recall Jack Ewald sold "bushings" that you put in the block 
when putting a 1.5 head on a 1.6 engine or in the head when 
putting a 1.6 head on a 1.5 engine.  They simply sealed up the 
difference in the opening sizes, from what I understand.
