6:27 pm Europe’s had high mileage turbo direct
injection diesels, running on ‘clean’ diesel, for
several years. 85% of all cars sold in Europe are such
models. Last March, my Renault full-size wagon rental
in Italy got 62 mpg over 1850 miles. I was not gentle,
and we did lots of mountains and high-speed autostrada
driving. I used less than two full tanks of blue
diesel in the two weeks! 

Most Euro TDI’s get MPG’s in the high 50]s to low 70’s

 and some are American models not available here as
TDI’s. Some manufacturers will start selling “50 state
TDI diesels” by next summer (VW & BMW 
 Mercedes
already sells one here).

Living in California, I say “bring ‘em on.”

I just saw what SEEMED to be a 2008 Passat TDI
yesterday on the road, new with paper registration
plates.
As of this summer, I have seen nothing but ULSD blue
diesel on the east coast from VT to NC as I traveled.
