Well guys, a little side venture of mine is working as an x-ray tech.
My take on the airbag thing is that they were developed specifically to
deal with the terrible and costly facial injuries received by occupants
of vehicles that do not wear their seat belt.
Since the big seat belt push essentially driven by insurance companies,
facial injuries from contact with windshield glass have dropped to
almost nil, while head, neck and wrist injuries from airbags are their
replacement, while the public is of the impression that safety comes
from the airbags, not the belts it seems.
For example. As I was tootling down the highway in my pristine 82 jetta
na, a lady pulled onto the highway, Rather than t-bone her, I swerved
to the limit of an 82 Jetta, and sheared off the front 2-1/2 feet of her
grand am, causing some excitement, and an abrupt stop for her, as I spun
a couple of times on the highway. Her only injuries were facial, from
the airbag. Her first words on exiting the vehicle were "Thank God for
the airbag." Hmmm.
I race cars. Seatbelts work just fine, 5 point belts work even better.
With my HANS device on, a 50G momentary load is something you walk away
from, and I think that's pretty cool.
In a passenger car, airbags are only going to help if the car gets
significantly shortened and you get into the steering column, Or you
don't wear your belts in teh first place. The one biggest stupid thing
is that damn knee bar in the 97 Passat. It's there so you can not wear
your belts and still hit the airbag correctly while fracturing your
femurs. Nice trade off.
The side curtain jobs save a lot of cuts and stuff from the side glass,
they aren't a bad idea for rollovers..
Incidentally, other than changing steering wheels, installing an airbag
system into any vehicle isn't too involved, 55 chevy or model t. It's
just a small explosive package inside a balloon with a detonator and
controller.
