Anohter update, if you think you know what you are
doing with timing but don't do it everyday, go back
and check your work SOON after getting your motor
running. This is a testament for the VW diesel.

Being convinced I had a bad glow plug and my timing
was a LITTLE retarted, as starting was very hard now
that is is chilly and lots of smoke.

So, had time Monday, temps were nice.
I pulled the injectors, glows working Fine.
OK, Timing is back to far then, put the dial indicator
in, find TDC mark, go backwards until no dial
movement, zero it. come back to TDC. WOW, the meter
says, .029", oh, check the advance cable, it is OUT
about 1/2 way, put is it, that takes be even farther
back, .025"
The only time I checked the timing was before I got
the motor running, I am sure advance cable was in.
So, either something moved or I did not have the dial
guage in correctly?? I set it to .095" according to
my notes.

That explains why I had such a dirty diesel exhaust
smell, I was injecting the fuel WAY to late in the
stroke. Rough starting, for sure. I even had to pull
the advance cable 1/2 way to keep it from stubbling
after the motor was hot.
Wow, how a motor can run that far retarted, ???
Now, sitting at .040" Boy, does it start nice and run
good now. Can I spell idiot....

The only think I did differently this time was I used
the cam bolt to turn the motor, not the crank bolt??
That does not matter.

Commnets??????
