One way to get around the use of oil is to do a "leakdown" test. It is a
device that puts 100# of compressed air into the cylinder, and with some
magic that I am not familiar with, you are able to determine % leakage
past the rings and valves.
On the other hand, if you use oil, it is not 'atomized' and remains
attached to the cylinder walls(stays cool). Though it is possible, the
likely-hood that the oil will ignite is pretty low.
If you use a cheapy Harbor-Freight diesel compression gauge @$16.99, and
it does light off, who cares?
