Rudy, I have not installed a windshield but have removed a few. The
older ones with the rubber gasket do have the metal "tack strips". I
guess they help keep everything solidly in place. The glue-in type
started in late '82 or '83. They also have a gasket, just not the same
kind. If you got a windshield and gasket for a late model Rabbit, you
likely have the glue-in style. I don't know if they have the tack strip
or not. Apparently yours did. Have you thought about just getting a
glass guy out to install your new windshield? That way if it leaks, you
can make them re-seal it!

I left the car outside last night and decided this morning, that was the
last straw. I removed the Windshield today, had to cut and chip away at
the old Glue in Gasket but got the Windshield out in one piece, cut it
free from the outside and didn't have to hassle with the tack strips.
I believe the replacement Gasket is Rubber and not a Glue in one. I'm
wondering if I leave the Metal Strips for this Gasket or remove them.
I'd appreciate any suggestions from anyone who's installed a Windshield
using this Gasket. I'm thinking I'll install it and then run a bead of
Sealant under the Seal afterwards.
Rudy
