On the subject of glass replacement I thought I would pass on this little tip that might save you lots of money. The windshield/glass replacement is quite competitive so shop around. I once had a Peugeot 604, not a common car. Got quotes from $195 to over $400. For $195, I got a new tinted windshield including installation. On a 1955 Pontiac I recall getting a new windshield including installation. It may pay you to get a new windshield instead of using an old one. If the one they install cracks, you can probably get them to replace it glass & labor. But if they install your windshield they may be able to blame its cracking on its being old. Also a new windshield is usually clearer to see thru since 80,000 to 100,000 miles or more is often pitted from sand & normal wear. When you get a replacement windshield check it for any distortion. I once had a 1979 VW microbus that needed a new windshield. The new one was distorted right in the forward field of vision. They replaced it for free after I complained about it, & no hassle. As I recall, the cost of that windshield was under $200. I don't think new glass for any VW would be hard to find or expensive. If glass is rare & hard to find, that is another matter. Often, the glass replacement specialists will come right to your house as they work out of their trucks & don't have a shop for you to take it to.
