[Vwdiesel] outer CV question

I don't know about rebuilding CV joints but with my Dasher diesel I was able to buy a brand new left side half shaft with new inner & outer C/V joints & new rubber boots for under $80 as near as I can recall. If this is the cost for my Dasher, I would imagine the cost for a Rabbit or Fox would be the same or less. If the outer C/V joint is worn out, how much life does the inner C/V joint have?
