[Vwdiesel] Manifold Nuts

I'll amend my recommendation...use the soft steel, coated with copper nuts
that Loren mentioned. They do lock reasonably into place with light
torque, as is appropriate for manifolds.
Forget the hardened nuts. They work for me, but you are right, they
do not come off easily with nutcrackers. I tend to use a torch, but
not everyone has them available.
So, recommendation retracted, and go with the stock nuts. They work OK
in this part of the salt belt, but I do wash off my engine several times
during the winter.
