The point is they ARE available now for well less than $200 and directions for their use are readily available too.

Probably because until someone recently found one for about 
$40 or so, they were close to $200 for a plastic tension gauge.
Once you get the feel for it you can set it as accurate as 
necessary and much more quickly without it. :-)
If you don't know how to read the gauge then you're not better 
off and it's not blatantly obvious how to us it.
