The TD won't drop into any Passat (or other vehicle)
equipped with the VR6 engine without also changing the
transmission to one that was originally mated to a
4-cylinder. Different bellhousings.
A Cabrio (95+) would be better suited, just because of
the weight. However, I'd say that a Cabriolet
(81ish-93) are even better suited. First, because
they are probably a bit lighter than a Cabrio and
second, because they are based off of the MK1 chassis.
The engine will bolt into any VW equipped with a
4-cylinder motor until at least 1999.5, some later
depending on the model. However, the ease as far as
everything else will depend on the simplicity of the
rest of the car and the similarity to what the engine
was in originally.
I recently got rid of my '86 and got a '92 Cabriolet.
At first, it doesn't seem that there is much
difference. However, there are a lot of small
upgrades that were done over the time that it really
is quite a bit nicer of a car.
Since it sounds like you are looking for a car to swap
the motor into, I'd suggest that you find a 90-93
Cabriolet that is in good shape. If you can find one
with a blown motor (and hence a cheaper price) that
would be even better for you. And now that summer is
over, the prices will probably take a bit of a
seasonal dip.
