Well, been a while since I have posted. Too busy with the start of
school, rebuilding a fence, taking one last camping trip and enjoying
my new granddaughter (4 months old). I have been doing a few things
to the Westy to get it road worthy: new brakes front and back, new
brake rotors up front, new shocks front and rear, 85 springs front
and rear (about 2" taller) and new front upper ball joints just to
name a few things. Today I tackled the reassembly of the AAZ TD
engine. I had previously installed an AHU crank with new rod and
main bearings (I want to avoid the dreaded AAZ crank bolt failure
problem) and installed a set of high flow GTD injectors to go along
with the tweaked pump that I had done by a fellow in Canada. Today,
I installed a set of ARP head studs and new head gasket. Man what an
improvement over the stretch bolts. Easy install and easy torque -
80 ft/lbs. I then reinstalled the cam, intake manifold, exhaust
manifold and turbo, using all new gaskets of course. Just on a whim,
I checked the glow plugs and found 3 of the 4 are bad, will need to
order a set tomorrow. I have also installed a hybrid oil pump that
includes the high output pump body(big gears) of the AAZ and the
funny, long reach oil pickup of the Vanagon diesel. I also loosely
installed the oil pan (also a Vanagon diesel only part) with the AAZ
oil splash shield in place for the pan gasket. I have also devised a
way to use the EGR port on the exhaust manifold to mount my EGT
sender so I will have a Pre-turbo temperature. I am also thinking of
installing a post turbo unit on the downpipe, just for comparison.
It was during the reassembly that I realized that I need a part. I
will be reversing the intake neck on the intake manifold to
facilitate the installation of an intercooler. However, the neck on
the AAZ has a huge boss cast into it for the EGR. Does anyone have
just the gooseneck for the manifold, or lacking that, an spare
intake manifold from a 1.6 TD or one from a non-EGR AAZ? Let me hear
from you if you have one. I will be posting some pictures on my web
page when I get some time (I will include some info on the Jeep Grand
Cherokee CRD on there also). More later. Hayden
