The trailer is indeed the front of a diesel Rabbit, at one time outfitted with a 3KW 
alternator to charge the batteries in the electric Rabbit up front.  Plus it can push via 
it's automatic transmission.  Supposedly works quite well, trailer only used for longer 
trips, as the battery powered EV can run by itself.
