I have a genset that runs like that- a 9hp 30 amp unit that runs on the 
smell of an oily rag.  I still think you can do better with less steps- 
direct usage of the power produced by a moderately sized engine.

  Trouble is, stuff like my truck is ridiculously overpowered.  Simply 
matching the drivetrain to the circumstances is a great boost.

Since you're talking small motors, I would think TWO gensets would be 
your answer.  One bigger for cruise on no more than 2% grade, one 
smaller to help out if you get hilly, more than normal.
