there is a cylinder like stop that is secured on the inside of the fire wall, in the cabin. I have seen
this come off. I welded a small angle on each side and used self tapping screws, securing it on the engine side. aside from the stop on the trans, this is the only spot that would cause your condition providing the cable is good.
