I agree with Terry. There is no reason they cannot look up parts, their parts system would allow them to look for stuff for old beetles, etc if the actual part is available through VW. If it was unavailable, then the system would tell them and may not even give a part number anymore, but he would still be able to look for it.
Alternatively, if you have a part number you could call and give them the number. I do that a lot, just call and say, "I've got a part number I'd like you to check for me."
