Well the new head has been installed on my 91 Jetta ECO now turbo diesel and
I just installed the new lifters. It seems if you store a good head, you
need to take the came out. I guess when I put the new head up in the attic
of the garage three years ago and didn't take the cam out the pressure on
the lifters over that time collapsed them and so they would never pump up.

It is so nice to have a nice and quiet running engine now with no lifter tap
noise. Just the sweet sound of a smooth running diesel. Now to see how my
economy has been affected.

One thing I did notice is that with adjustment of my timing it had affected
my EGT. It seems that retarding my timing affected my EGT. At least that I
what I'm seeing. The EGT gets hotter faster now and the only thing I changed
was the timing. It was advanced to far and had loud clatter so I backed it
down a bit, it still seemed loud so I backed it down just a bit more and now
my EGT climbs faster than before and higher. I can hit 1200 F just from
running hard through the gears where as before it would just make it up to
1200 F but not really as fast as it does now.

So in question how much does timing affect EGT?

Nick
