  Which engine is the 2.1L?  If it has a MAF then not having things 
connected could make a difference.  Older MB's have an air throttle 
linked through on the way to the pump...
  Otherwise I'd look for a restriction in the supply or return lines.  
Next try a fuel pump in the supply line, or gravity feed.  The 
supply pump in the IP could be bad, leaking or vanes sticking.
