Summer is a good time to do a windshiled. Warm, new glass is
much harder to break than cold, old glass. There is no sealer
between the gasket and the glass nor the metal with a standard
installation. It's only used if there is a problem after a proper
installation fails to seal up all leaks and it's not something else.
When we did Jake's paint, he had a hole in his windshield
corner. I think my Rabbit did also. One of the two had one
in the corner of the hatch also, ALL under the seal. Had
them all welded up before going ahead.
The antenna wire goes through the inner fender right to the
cabin, above the fuse box. There was a recall on it or at least
a service bulletin. I did one or two when I was at the dealer.
The other guys said they'd done a BUNCH of them shortly before
I started.
Not all the Rabbits had the plastic insert gasket. It's different
than the trim on the A2 bodies or even roughly '83 on, Rabbits.
Those had glue-in glass thus different trim. The glass I got for
my Jetta had a trim already on it and I think that was the only
trim it got. The bit of gap was filled after it was installed... I
think. I really haven't looked since it was done!
