[Vwdiesel] Are the axle Shaft assemblies different ?

For what it's worth...I've told the story before about
a machine shop that pressed out a front bearing on a
81 Rabbit.  That front wheel bearing lasted about 20K.
I replaced it again and again.  Finally, I replaced the
spindle and hub, with one from a junk yard.  

That one got a new bearing, and lasted well over 100k 
miles.

Apparently the 50 ton press did something to the spindle and 
hub which kept causing failures.

So damage during WB replacement is not out of the question.
