[Vwdiesel] Looking for Tips to Minimize Startup Smoking in Winter

  I can think of three things that would likely cause your 
problem, well maybe four.
  First would be a bad glow plug 
or two but that smoke should clear up in 20 seconds or so
and would make for difficult starting and rough running for 
the first 20 seconds or so.
  Second would be a bad injector or two.  Poor spray pattern 
will make cold starting smoke, not as rough starting or running 
as a glow plug but more smoke and will last longer.  Sound will 
be different from proper running engine.
  Third would be timing.  Engine should start and run well with 
the cold start knob out.  After 5 to 10 seconds it should run 
with just a bit of faltering.  Before that it may even die.  "Rattle" 
should be less sharp with it in than out.  Warm it should be 
perceptible but not heavily noticeable.
  Fourth would be low compression.  Starting should be 
difficult and cranking rhythm would not be even.
